Ferriday falls to Farmerville by Joey Martin - posted Thursday, November 12th, 2009 @ 8:13 am  E-mail Story |  Print Story  In a game filled with big plays, Farmerville High came up with four covering 48 yards or more in a 44-24 win over Ferriday Friday night at Melz Field to finish unbeaten in District 2-2A. Farmerville, 9-1 overall, captured its second straight district title, while Ferriday (7-3) finished 3-2 in district play. "You are going to have about 10-to-12 big plays in a game and they usually decide who wins," said Ferriday coach Freddie Harrison. "There were some big plays by both teams," said Farmerville coach Joe Spatafora. "Our defense came up with some big plays while the offense was doing it's job." After holding Farmerville on its first possession, Ferriday went 52 yards in four plays with Bobby Madison breaking several tackles up the middle on a 30-yard run to the end zone. The conversion failed. After both defenses held, the scoring binge began with Farmerville quarterback Caleb Kelley hitting Carl Pearson on a 39-yard scoring play. Madison went over the 1,000-yard mark in rushing in the contest, finishing the regular season with 1,082. On Ferriday's second play from scrimmage on its next possession, Davonta Scott raced 52 yards for a score, breaking several tackles while regaining his balance twice after being tripped up to score. Scott has more than 2,200 yards this season in total offense. The conversion failed, leaving the Trojans with a 12-6 advantage. Farmerville answered with a score early in the second period as Kelly hit Derrick Lawrence on a 53-yard pass play on third-and-20 in which Ferriday's Nieco Amado cut in front of Lawrence and batted the ball down, only to have it hit his foot and bounce back up into the hands to Lawrence, who raced to the end zone. Depaul Elliot ran in the conversion. Scott answered with an 83-yard kickoff return on the ensuing kickoff to put the Trojans up 18-14. Farmerville regained the lead on their next possession as Kelly connected with Javis Cooke on a 16-yard TD pass on fourth-and-six with 6:26 remaining. Elliot ran in the conversion to give the Farmers a 22-18 lead. Ferriday was stopped on downs at the Farmerville 44 and was forced to punt. Facing third-and-four at their 18-yard line, Elliot busted through the line and raced 82 yards for the score to give Farmerville a 30-18 advantage with 3:05 remaining in the first half. Ferriday moved down to the Farmerville 13 in a series that saw Trojan quarterback Rodney Lawson completed a 2-yard pass to himself after it was deflected. Facing fourth-and-goal at the Farmers' 13-yard line, the Trojans were unable to convert any points after an incompletion. "That was big not being able to convert there," Harrison said. "We would have gone down by a touchdown at halftime." The Trojans struck first in the second half as Lawson competed a 57-yard pass to Scott for a score on the second play from scrimmage in the third period. The conversion failed, leaving the Trojans trailing 30-24. "We haven't been able to convert a two-point conversion the past four weeks," Harrison said. "That can decide a football game." After an exchange of punts, Wesley Woods added the scoring for the Farmers as he scored a 30-yard scoring run. Woods ran in the conversion. Following a Ferriday fumble, Keontae Fields burst through the Trojan line and raced tot he end zone on a 70-yard scoring run with 1:19 remaining in the third period for the final score of the game. Ferriday moved down to the 13 early in the final period, but was unable to score. Farmerville downed the ball three times with just under two minutes remaining on the Trojan 1-yard line. Elliott ran for 171 yards and a score and Fields totaled 162 yards with a touchdown. Kelley finished with 127 yards passing. "Our guys are still learning and need to understand the little things," Harrison said. "You have to go hard every single play." Ferriday and Farmerville are both at home this Friday in first-round playoff games. The two teams will play at Farmerville in the second round if they both advance. "It would be another good one if we both play good enough to get for," Spatafora said. If Ferriday wins Friday, it would have to go on the road to Farmerville or University Lab in Baton Rouge. Mangham and Jonesboro-Hodge also made the playoffs out of District 2-2A.
