Vidalia recreation director terminated
by Joey Martin - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
Concordia Recreation District No. 3 Recreation Director Mike Bowlin said he was shocked and disappointed upon receiving a letter on Feb. 25 saying his job would be terminated on Feb. 28.

"I had no idea," Bowlin said. "I was working toward getting ready for the new complex and have all kinds of notes and thought we were moving in the right direction. We were talking about some concrete details once the financing came through. This is tough to take,"

According to the letter from the recreation district, which is signed by Chairman Marc Archer, the board made the decision to no longer fund the postion.

"This decision has not been an easy one," the letter states. "This position began as a one-year contract with the stipulation that a review would take place at the end of the year. At the end of that first year it was decided not to have a contract but to make the position a month-by-month position position with salary being paid on the same basis. So as not to rush into a decision, the Board studied this matter for several months. This decision was very difficult to make. However, in consideration of the best overall interests of youth and adults who utilize our programs, the disadvantages of continuation of this position are felt to outweigh its benefits. The elimination of the position of Recreation Director becomes effective on February 28, 2010."

The letter concludes by saying the board looks forward to working with Bowlin in future recreation projects and invites him to submit an application should another position become available."

Bowlin was paid $28,000 a year.
