Drummer enters not guilty plea in deputy's death posted Thursday, July 29th, 2010 @ 7:50 am  E-mail Story |  Print Story  BY TORI STILWELL The man charged in the death of a Concordia Parish sheriff's deputy after a collision pleaded not guilty to vehicular homicide and other accusations in court last Wednesday, July 21. Joseph L. Drummer, 31, of 731 Bell Grove Circle in Vidalia now awaits a Sept. 1 hearing in Division A, Seventh Judicial District Court. Drummer faced a grand jury on July 19, two days before he pleaded not guilty. He was indicted on charges of vehicular homicide, driving under suspension, operating a motor vehicle while under suspension for certain prior offenses and a second offense of possession of marijuana. Drummer's charges are the result of a May 16 collision with and resulting in the death of deputy John T. Mott, 41, of Ferriday. Drummer's 1991 Chevrolet pickup truck crashed into Mott's Harley Davidson motorcycle when he attempted to make a left turn. Neither Drummer nor his passenger, Shawn McCarty of Vidalia, was injured in the crash. Drummer's attorney, public defender Myisha Davis, also asked for a bond reduction on behalf of her client, arguing the current amount of $131,000 was unreasonable because neither Drummer nor his contacts were able to pay it.
