School Board to fill superintendent post on January 31

The Concordia Parish School Board will hire a new superintendent January 31 during a special meeting, the board decided during its regular meeting Thursday night.

Interim Superintendent Loretta Peterson is one of the three candidates for the post. Other candidates include Linda D'Amico of Morganza and Jerry Payne of Pine Grove.

Blankenstein, principal of Ferriday Lower, has served as acting superintendent since November,

D'Amico is employed by the Pointe Coupee Parish school system as Director of Instruction/Supervisor of Federal programs. Payne is the superintendent of Bogalousa City Schools.

Board members will interview the three candidates on January 28.

The board also re-elected Gary Parnham as president and Raymond Riley as vice-president.

In other business, a motion to raise Board member pay from $350 per month up to the state average of $650 per month failed even though five members of the board, a majority on the nine-member body, supported the measure.

However, Board policy and state statutes note that an increase in compensation requires the support from two-thirds of the board, or, in the the parish Board's case -- six members.

Raymond Riley offered the motion for the raise. Martha Rabb seconded the motion.

In addition to those two members, supporting the raise were Fred Butcher, Daryl Price and Deanie Roberts.

Voting against the motion were Ricky Raven, Gary Parnham and Darlene Baker.

Board member Mary Campbell was not in attendance at the meeting.

Butcher suggested before the vote that if the raises were approved that the board hold an additional three meetings a year to focus specifically on academics. He recommended that the meetings be held at schools.
