Ferriday sweeps Natchez
by Joey Martin - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
Motivation was the theme of the night as Ferriday High swept Natchez High in a pair of contests at Ferriday.

Ferriday's girls had plenty to play for as the Lady Bulldogs defeated the Lady Trojans 58-46 in the Miss-Lou Classic at Natchez High in November.

The Lady Trojans were also without starting forward Ja'Lessia Davis, who was out with the flu.

But the motivation did not stop there against the Lady Bulldogs, who were ranked No. 6 in the entire state two weeks ago.

"Our girls play AAU ball with their girls each summer," said Lady Trojan coach Lisa Abron. "They know each other very well. Our girls are familiar with everybody on their team."

Natchez may not have been too familiar with Lady Trojan freshman guard Shante Poole, who scored 30 points in Ferriday's 79-76 win.

Poole handled the Lady Bulldog pressure with ease and had several breakaway baskets.

"Shante played like a senior," Abron said.

The Lady Trojans trailed 18-10 after oner period, but outscored Natchez 28-11 in the second period for a 38-29 advantage. Ferriday led 50-36 at one point of the third quarter.

But the Lady Bulldogs rallied in the final quarter to make a game of it an even took the lead at 76-75 with 36 seconds remaining.

Jasmine Upchurch, who finished with 19 points, convered a rebound to put the Lady Trojans back on top and T'Keyah Fletcher added two free throws with 3.4 seconds remaining for the final score.

Jasmine Butler netted 22 points for the Lady Trojans.

"That was a huge win for us," Abron said. "To win a big game like that proves we are capable of doing something in district."

In the boys contest, Ferriday also got some revenge after falling 40-38 to the Bulldogs in the Miss-Lou Classic.

The Trojans seemed destined to fall just short again when they trailed 54-50 with 5:03 remaining.

But the Trojans scored nine of the next 11 points in the contest, hitting five free throws to key a 59-52 win.

Ferriday led 13-12 after one period and 30-29 at halftime. Natchez took a 41-39 after three periods before the Trojans outscored the Bulldogs 20-11 in the final quarter.

Matthew Smith led the Trojans with 16 points, while Levier Pryor added 13 and Josh Upchurch 11.

The win continues Ferriday's momentum after winning its first three district games.

"It helps our kids to face a team with a lot of talent as we get prepared to play the second half of our district schedule," said Ferriday head coach K.G. Watkins.

Deshawn Griggs led Natchez with 16 points while Kendall Logan scored 15 for the Bulldogs.

Ferriday returns to district action Friday with games at Sterlington.

Ferriday swept Sterlington at home earlier this month in their district opener, with the girls winning 52-20 after leading 42-4 at halftime.

In the boys contest, Ferriday broke open a close game in the second quarter on its way to a 61-42 win.

Ferriday returns home Tuesday against Lake Providence.
