Public hearing set on land purchase in Vidalia The Concordia Parish Police Jury will hold a public hearing on February 11 concerning a request by the Recreational District 3 Board of Directors in Vidalia to purchase property behind Walmart.
In letter to the Jury, Board chairman Mark Archer asked for permission to purchase 20 acres -- at a cost to the district of $340,000 -- but jurors opted to hold a public hearing before considering the request.
In the letter Archer noted:
"The amount of acreage available for consideration is 50 acres; the cost being $17,000 per acre. This land is located behind Walmart store on Highway 84 in Vidalia. The Recreation Board proposes to purchase approximately 20 acres.
"The City of Vidalia proposes to purchase approximately 30 acres adjacent to our 20 acres. The City would offer for lease to the Recreation Board, these 30 acres for a nominal fee for 50 years with an option to lease 49 acres at the end of the 50 year period. The leasing of this 30 acres would offer our District a total of 50 acres for future expansion, development and upgrading; thereby enhancing the facilities and recreational programs."
Vidalia Mayor Hyram Copeland said, "I want to commend the the previous recreational board for their hard work and the city is excited about working with the new recreational board. We believe this is a tremendous project and will enhance our recreational activities. This is a tremendous economic tool for us." |
