Lady Wolves still young To say Monterey High had a young softball team last season would be an understatement.
The same could be said this year with only one senior on the team who is playing softball for the first time.
"We've got some strong players coming up," said Monterey softball coach Hazel Brallier. "We should be pretty good, even though we are still young. I'm optimistic. These girls grew up a lot last year and got better as the year went on."
The three members of last year's team to make All-Parish were pitcher Holli Clay, now a sophomore, Ellen Bairnsfather, who is now an eighth-grader, and catcher Taylor Morace, now a freshman.
The lone senior is Madison Simpson, who will be playing left field.
Clay returns as the Lady Wolves top pitcher, while eighth-grader Ellen Bairnsfather will also see time on the mound when not in center field.
Sophomore Brooke Baker will be in center field, while freshman Taylor Morace will also see time in the infield.
Freshman Kendall Lipsey is playing third and first base.
The lone juniors on the team are Guylan Britt and Rebecca Cavin.
Other sophomores are Taylor Spann, Lauren New, Alaina Poole, Ariel Hector, Casey White and Mary Foreman.
Other freshmen are Rachel Pecanty, Danielle Palmer, Logan Dale, Tanner Trant and Anna Cross.
"The girls are working together and they are really motivated," Brallier said. "They are ready to get out there and working hard."
Monterey will compete in the Franklin Parish Jamboree on Feb. 7-9. |
