Story Archives: Vidalia drops first district game

Vidalia drops first district game
by Joey Martin - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
Vidalia High boys coach Robert Sanders knew he might be in for a long day when he had trouble getting a school bus for his team's basketball game at Bunkie Friday and then the team had to make a detour in Marksville becaues of construction.

The Viking team was just able to leave on time, but the trip was not a good one as Vidalia dropped its first district game of the season to Bunkie, 49-48 in Bunkie.

Vidalia led 25-19 at halftime, but trailed 37-32 going into the final quarter.

After a missed free throw by Bunkie with nine seconds remaining, Vidalia had one last chance to win the game with Quartrell Thomas taking a shot under contact, but there was no foul called on the play.

"One official was actually going to the free throw line with the ball, but when he saw the other two heading for the exit, he took off," Sanders said. "But we just didn't play well. We only scored seven points in the third quarter. We fought back, but we shouldn't have been in that hold to start with."

Quartrell Thomas led Vidalia with 20 points.

Vidalia's girls fell to Bunkie, 48-31.

Tyshica Rodgers led Vidalia with 10 points.
