Lady Vikings fall in opener Vidalia High's softball team allowed Neville High five unearned runs in the first inning before falling to the Lady Tigers 9-4 in their season-opener at Vidalia Monday.
"We make the routine plays and we are right in there with them," said Vidalia coach Jeanne Hall. "I want these girls to be mentally exhausted after a game from thinking about what they have to do every time our pitcher lets go of the ball. Right now we are just not there. There were some good things, like our base running and our outfielders throwing ahead of runners. We have not had a lot of time on the field because of the weather, but we still need to be playing better than we did in the opener."
Vidalia committed five errors in the opening inning, allowing leadoff hitter Pauline Fontana to reach second base on an error before she scored on another error.
The Lady Vikings settled down a bit following the error-prone first inning and put two runs on the board in the second inning as Mary Katherine Golden walked, Alaina Burns reached on a grounder when the throw to second base was too late to force pinch-runner Sydney Guidroz, Tori Lemoine reached on a passed ball and Mary Sanders scored Guidroz on a fly out to first base. Kassi Randall walked and Burns scored on a wild pitch for the second run of the inning.
Neville added a run in the third inning and three more in the sixth inning.
Vidalia added two more runs as Chelsie McElwee and Lemoine both scored on passed balls.
Vidalia will compete in the Menard Tournament this weekend.
The Lady Vikings face Avoyelles in a junior varsity game Friday before meeting Grace Christian in a varsity game at 8 p.m.
On Saturday, Vidalia faces Pine Prairie in a junior varsity game at 9 a.m., followed by a varsity game against Pitkin at noon.
Vidalia meets LaSalle in a varsity game at 1:30 p.m.
The Lady Vikings finish up with varsity games against Simpson and Block on Saturday. |
