Hound baseball ends season
by Joey Martin - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
Huntington School closed out its season with two shutout losses, falling to Oak Hill High of Gainesville, Fla., 16-0 on April 9 in Ferriday, before ending the year with a 15-0 setback at Brookhaven Thursday.

Tyler Parvin kept the Hounds without a hit over the four-inning contest.

Kolby Byrd homered and singled twice for Brookhaven, while Will Gatlin and Corey Dickerson also homered.

Oak Hill is coached by Kevin Maris, the son of former St. Louis great Roger Maris.

"The game against the Florida team was pretty close for a little bit," said Huntington coach Mitch Ashmore. "They just have better players. Brookhaven has some guys who can swing the bat, they are just stronger and better."

The Hounds missed the district tournament by finishing third in District 6A South after playing for the Class A State Championship the past three years.

"Sometimes the law of averages catches up to you," Ashmore said. "We had some injuries and we had to struggle for everything. If we made one mistake, it blossomed into runs for the other team. We didn't get out of a lot of bad situations. But I believe we can be successful next year with eight starters coming back. Without injuries, this team can be competitive again."
