Story Archives: Vidalia ready for playoffs

Vidalia ready for playoffs
by Joey Martin - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
There are a lot of questions heading into the postseason for Vidalia High baseball coach Johnny Lee Hoffpauir.

He'll find out the answer to one of those questions today as the Class 3A baseball coaches met in Alexandria to decide the seedings for the playoffs.

It's the first time coaches will decide on the seedings. Previously, the Louisiana High School Athletic Association seeded teams for the playoffs.

Ed note - Vidalia, seeded No. 17 will travel to No. 16 Iowa Friday at 3:30 p.m. The Vikings will play the winner of No.1 Lutcher vs. Wossman if they do win.

Vidalia and Marksville tied for the District 3-3A title, splitting their games with each dropping one other district contest.

"I have no clue what to expect," Hoffpauir said before heading to Alexandria. "I've heard talk of cliques and teams getting together to help each other out. I would say we have a 50-50 chance of hosting a first-round game. I have no idea what way this thing is going."

That's where the other question comes in. Because of seepage water, Vidalia's baseball field is flooded by the home team's dugouts and the infield is very soft.

"I have been talking to the Natchez teams about using Liberty Park and with ACCS and Huntington," Hoffpauir said of possibly having to use an alternate home field site. "All I know for sure right now is that our dugout will be in water all the way to home plate."

Vidalia ended its regular season at 17-6 with a 13-3 win at Franklin Parish Tuesday.

The Vikings scored three runs in the second and third innings and five in the fifth.

Mason Ozburn was the winning pitcher.

Trey Brasher had four hits, including a double. Trey Barnes, Jake DeWeese, Seth Thompson and Cameron Boyette had two hits each.

"I feel good going into the playoffs," Hoffpauir said. "I think we are swinging the bats real well. The big question mark is our defense. I never know which defense will show up. That's been our Achille's heel. Our pitching is where it ought to be. In a one-game playoff format you never know what will happen. Lutcher and Parkview Baptist are the teams to beat, but I think we can put a scare into some people."

Vidalia defeated Avoyelles 16-5 Thursday to clinch a share of the District 3-3A title with Marksville.

Avoyelles, which handed Marksville its only other district loss, scored three runs on three errors and took an early lead over Vidalia.

The Vikings came back with seven runs in the second inning as Hunter Martin hit his first home run

Hunter, Trey Barnes, Beau Doughty and Cameron Ainsworth were honored before the game as the only seniors.

Vidalia scored four more runs in the third to take a commanding lead over the Mustangs.

Avoyelles helped Vidalia by walking 12 Viking batters and hitting one over the course of the game.

Vidalia ended the game in the bottom of the sixth with the 10-run mercy rule as DeWeese connected on a three-run home run. DeWeese also doubled in the contest.

Barnes singled twice and had three walks in the contest. Ozburn doubled.
