Upchurch signs with Northwestern

Josh Upchurch played football and basketball up until his sophomore year in high school.

It was at that time the 6-foot-8, 265-pound center made a choice to concentrate on one sport.

"Basically my height and I didn't like getting hit a lot of the football field decided that for me," Upchurch said.

The choice seems to have paid off for the Ferriday senior, who earned a basketball scholarship to Northwestern State University in Natchitoches.

Upchurch averaged 10.7 points a game and 3.4 rebounds for the Trojans, who lost to St. Thomas Aquinas in the Class 2A state championship game in March.

Upchurch will redshirt his freshman year to become eligible academically.

"I think that is going to help me, not only with my academics, but getting used to the college atmosphere," he said.

Upchurch was also recruited by several junior colleges, including Hinds Community College and Lee Community College in Baytown, Texas.

"I really like the atmosphere and the people a lot at Northwestern," Upchurch said. "Coach McConathy is really cool."
