School Board members pay issue back on board agenda

Personal matters highlighted the regular meeting of the Concordia Parish School Board Thursday night, while the board also agreed to consider for the second time this year whether to give itself a pay raise.

A pay raise motion failed to gain two-thirds support six months ago. Raymond Riley, who brought up the raise issue at that time, asked at last week's meeting that the matter be considered again at its next meeting. His motion Thursday night was seconded by Martha Rabb and approved unanimously by the board.

When considered in February, the Board looked at upping each member's pay from $350 per month up to the state average of $650 per month. The measure failed even though five members of the board, a majority on the nine-member body, supported the measure.

However, Board policy and state statutes says that an increase in compensation necessitates the support of two-thirds of the board, or, in the parish Board's case -- six members.

Supporting the raise last January were Riley, Rabb, Fred Butcher, Daryl Price and Deanie Roberts.

Voting against the motion were Ricky Raven, Gary Parnham and Darlene Baker.

Board member Mary Campbell was not in attendance at that meeting.

In personnel matters last week, James McGee of the Catahoula Parish School System was hired as supervisor of Maintenance and Transportation, replacing Tommy Lanius, who retired.

Stephanie Murphy and Tina Fitt were hired as elementary counselors, while assistant principals hired included Bobbie Hinson at Ferriday Lower, Charles Anderson at Vidalia Lower and Lisa Carter at Ferriday Junior High. Butcher and Riley opposed hiring Anderson.

In other personnel matters, the board approved the following:
