Vidalia buys land for recreation complex

Mayor Hyram Copeland said today (Wednesday) that the City of Vidalia has purchased 30 acres of property behind Wal-Mart for a recreational complex.

The city paid $500,000 for the land, said Copeland, and will lease the property to Recreational District No. 3, which has purchased 20 acres of adjoining property for $340,000.

"We've signed the papers and hopefully today or by the end of this week will sign papers with the recreation district to complete the intergovernmental agreement for the complex property," said Copeland.

The property is located behind Wal-Mart, going toward the levee and over to the barns on Cecil Parker's farm land.

"This will be a great facility for the people in our town and it will provide us a chance to host district and state tournaments, which will be good for the business community," said Copeland. "This is very exciting and will be an asset to the entire area."
