Story Archives: Bowden competing at Burlington

Bowden competing at Burlington
by Joey Martin - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
Barry Bowden joined a pitching staff considered one of the best in the Appalachian League.

But the Southern Mississippi free agent has been up to the task, participating in three games, pitching four innings and posting a 2.08 earned run average for the Burlington Royals, the Class A farm team of the Kansas City Royals.

In Burlington's first win of the season, a 6-1 victory over the Pulaski Mariners, Bowden entered the game in the ninth inning and had a one-two-three performance.

Bowden has allowed three hits, one run, striking out six, walking one and hitting a batter.

Bowden, who was not selected in last week's amateur draft, finished with an 8-3 record his senior year at Southern Miss, posting a 2.12 earned run average and striking out 78 batters over 72 innings, walking 22.

Bowden returned from the injury on April 5 by not allowing Memphis a hit for five innings in the Conference USA Tournament before coming out because of a pre-determined pitch count.

Bowden was a first team All Conference-USA selection, was named C-USA pitcher of the week three times and national pitcher of the week twice in the same week.
