• LANDRIEU, JINDAL PLAN CONCORDIA VISITS

Gov. Bobby Jindal will be in Vidalia on Thursday for a town meeting, while U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu will visit Ferriday next week.

• SCHOOLS TO OPEN PARISHWIDE NEXT WEEK

Concordia schools may see a slight enrollment hike this school year, Supt. Loretta Blankenstein said this week as teachers and school personnel prepare for opening day on Monday, August 11. Classes begin at Huntington on Wednesday, August 13.

• CLAYTON MAN ARRESTED IN FEDERAL DRUG CASE

The Concordia Parish Sheriff's Office Narcotics Task Force assisted U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) officials early Monday morning as they seized numerous vehicles owned by Ples Edward Dobbins, 40, 153 Dianne St., Clayton.

• LEGISLATIVE AUDITOR REPORT ON CATAHOULA POLICE JURY

Legislature Auditor Steve J. Theriot has released a 21-page audit of the Catahoula Parish Police Jury's finances conducted at the request of the Jury to determine whether "dedicated tax revenues were being spent for other than their dedicated purposes." Auditors found this to be the case in some instances and offered a number of recommendations.

• WEEKEND STORM CAUSES WIDESPREAD OUTAGES

Heavy winds knocked trees and branches on utility lines in Concordia and Catahoula parishes over the weekend causing widespread power outages. The storm moved in around 1:30 a.m. Sunday and also knocked utility poles to the ground or broke them into.

• FERRIDAY BINGO ISSUE DEAD

The possibility of bingo in Ferriday apparently died last week when none of the five town aldermen offered a motion on the matter. Without an ordinance, the lack of action ended the hopes of Big Bucks Bingo LLC of starting a business in town.

• JINDAL APPOINTS VIDALIA MAYOR TO COMMISSION

Vidalia Mayor Hyram Copeland was named to the Louisiana Emergency Response Commission by Gov. Bobby Jindal. Copeland will serve as an at-large member.
