Lady Hounds fall in opener Huntington's Lady Hounds jumped into the frying pan in its return to fast-pitch softball, falling to Wilkinson County Christian Academy, 13-0 Monday in Ferriday.
The Lady Hounds returned to the diamond after not fielding a fast-pitch or slow-pitch team last season.
"That's a good team there," Huntington coach Marion Newman said of the Lady rams. "I look for them to be state champions or either playing for a state championship. Ray (Olive) does a heckuva job with them."
Despite not plating a run, Newman said a lot of positives from the opener.
"I'm proud of our girls," he said. "We hit the ball, we just couldn't get it to fall. Mental mistakes got us in trouble, but that's to be expected with only three or four who have played high school ball before. We'll get better. If we can get rid of some of the mental mistakes, we'll be all right."
The Lady Rams scored four runs over the first three innings and added six in the fourth for a double digit lead.
Julie Moak toed the circle for the Lady Hounds, while Bethany Fletcher was the winning pitcher.
Lauren Hall had Huntington's only hit.
Huntington will compete in the Amite School Center Tournament this Saturday before traveling to River Oaks in Monroe on Monday.
That game was originally scheduled for Ferriday, but has been changed. |
