• JAMES SKIPPER A FREE MAN TODAY

Convicted drug dealer James Skipper, 43, is a free man. He was released from the Avoyelles Correctional Facility in Cottonport last week after his 25-year prison sentence was reduced by Judge Leo Boothe on August 13.

• SUBDIVISION ISSUES UNDER JURY REVIEW

When developers submit plans and specifications to the Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) for projects in Concordia Parish, the Police Jury wants to know about it.

• VIDALIA CONVENTION CENTER PREPARED FOR EVACUEES

Vidalia Mayor Hyram Copeland has put city officials on alert to prepare the Vidalia Conference and Convention Center as a possible evacuation point if Gustav reaches and maintains hurricane strength and aims for the state.

• PARISH JOBLESS RATE 8.3% IN JULY

Concordia's jobless rate for July 2008 was 8.3 percent, according to figures released this week by the Louisiana Department of Labor. A total of 6,934 parish citizens were employed in July, while 624 were out of work.
