Faye's rains delay harvest operations Rainfall amounts ranged from one inch to three-plus inches in Concordia over the weekend thanks to Tropical Storm Faye.
While there were no reports of damage, the rainfall ran farmers out of the fields and once again halted harvest operations.
"The corn harvest is still incomplete and the soybeans are shattering and those not treated with fungicide will be rotting in the hull due to the moisture," said County Agent Glen Daniels.
He said the grain sorghum "is sprouting."
"With another system in the gulf, farmers are nervous," said Daniels. "We expect the worse but we have to hope and pray for the best."
Most areas of Monterey received about an inch of rain over the weekend, while three inches or more were recorded elsewhere in the parish.
"Along with the weather, and the high costs of operations, especially fuel, nitrogen and herbicides, there's not too much left in the kitty for the farmer," said Daniels. "About the only thing the rains are helping are the late-planted beans, those planted behind wheat." |
