Tensas gets 8-man win

Joe Coats got his initiation into 8-man football Friday night as the Tensas coach led his Chiefs to a 56-40 win over Calvary Christian.

"I don't ever remember giving up 40 points and winning by two touchdowns," said Coats, who coached at Neville High in Monroe. "But our kids played hard and kept playing. Calvary has 22 players and rotated throughout, whereas our 12 players wore down some a the end. But they hung in there,"

Tensas back Jim Lentz finished with 19 carries for 301 yards and four touchdown runs, including a 49-yard touchdown run in the first quarter gave the Chiefs a 14-8 lead.

Lentz added scoring runs of 73 and 12 yards early in the second quarter for a 28-8 lead. He also caught a 5-yard touchdown pass from Jon-Truman James.

James went 8-for-11 passing for 145 yards and two touchdowns and Mitch Lansing caught four passes for 87 yards and one touchdown. Tensas has an open date Friday before hosting Central on Sept. 5.

"I think the open date is at a good time because we are pretty fatigued and had a lot of cramping up and muscle spasms," Coats said. "We learned a lot after the first game and I think we will play better as the guys learn their responsibilities."
