Cathedral hosts Dexter Cathedral High opens its season Thursday as the Green Wave welcomes Dexter High to D'Evereaux Stadium.
Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.
The game is being held Thursday because of shortage of officials and to also allow more people to watch Cathedral play Thursday, while also attending the ACCS-Trinity game on Friday.
"I believe the kids are excited about being one of the first public schools to play in Mississippi," said Cathedral coach Craig Beesley. "Hopefully we will have a big crowd. We're excited and ready to play."
All of Cathedral's game are Region 4-1A games.
The Green Wave fell to Dexter 21-13 last year in their opener.
"They have a lot of speed and big-play ability," Beesley said. "Hopefully we can control the ball and move it down the field. We can't give up the big play. They are capable of scoring on every play."
"We've got a good group of seniors and good leadership," Beesley said. "Hopefully we can stay healthy. We started out 1-3 last year and could have easily been 4-0, but couldn't make some plays. We need to make those plays this year."
Cathedral's first four games last year were decided by a total of 18 points.
Preston Edwards (6-1, 185) returns at quarterback for his senior season after passing 1,257 yards last season.
In the backfield are seniors Jeb White (6-2, 180), Kole Junkin (6-1, 180) and Daniel Jenkins (6-0. 170).
Cathedral follows Thursday's game with two straight away games before hosting St. Aloysius for Homecoming on Sept. 19. |
