Pere´ new Huntington hoops coach

Nickie Pere´ has been named boys and girls varsity basketball coach at Huntington School.

Pere´ has assisted in football and basketball and was scheduled to coach the junior varsity boys basketball team this season.

But when Hound boys and girls head coach David Boydstun resigned earlier this month, Pere´ accepted the job of head coach.

Pere's son, Tyler, transferred from Monterey to Huntington two years ago because he wanted to play football.

"You don't know where the road is going to lead you," Pere´ said. "Things worked out. I wasn't looking for the jobs, but I'm glad I got them."

Boydstun coached the boys last year and was taking over for Penny Moak, who retired as girls basketball coach last month and is just coaching softball, cross country and track, while continuing to teach at the school.

Mark Stockstill will coach the junior varsity boys basketball team, while Craig Jackson will coach the junior varsity girls team. Moak is being assisted by Rut Horne in softball.

Huntington principal Anthony Palermo will serve as athletics director with assistance from Moak and assistant principal Emily Guida.

Pere´ said the fact he knows the players will help with the transition.

"I know all the kids and what they can do," he said. "I will have to work on X's and O's here and there and I've got some people in mind who can help me."

Pere´ said there are several football players who are playing basketball, while most of the girls basketball team are involved in softball and cheerleading.

"We're going to have good numbers with the boys," Pere´ said. "We should be able to play a fast tempo and press a lot. I'm only going to have seven or eight girls, so we'll have to manage the game to see how much up and down the court we will be able to do."

Pere´ said he has no apprehensions about being able to coach boys and girls basketball.

"It's going to be a challenge, but it's a challenge for the players, as well," Pere´said. "We'll meet the challenge together."
