Story Archives: Now is time for All-Trojan team

Now is time for All-Trojan team
by Joey Martin - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
My good friend A'Ron Thomas asked me, "So what about Ferriday?"

That was after my All-Faircloth team was released.

Well, there is certainly no way to pick an All-Ferriday High team going back to the 1950s.

So I started with 1970 when the Ferriday Bulldogs became the Ferriday Trojans after the desegregation order.

I'll put an all-Ferriday Bulldog team on the burner. And, yes, I'll eventually get to All-Huntington. And, oh yeah, a pre-All-Faircloth team.

Ferriday High's football team became the Trojans the final week of September, 1970 after voting by students selected the name and black and gold colors. The first three games they were simply known as "Jerry Bamburg's team" alluding to the first Trojan coach. Bamburg started out with 38 players and cut that down to 24 for District 2-AAA competition. The first win came over Lake Providence.

Of course, this all-Ferriday Trojan team is going to be dominated by Jerry Baldwin's teams of the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Quarterback was certainly a tough one to pick because there have been some outstanding passers and runners come down the pike.

In the end I decided to go with James Jones as the starter.

I will never forget asking J.T. Curtis his opinion of Jones after the Trojan quarterback gave an admirable performance in Ferriday's loss to John Curtis in the 1984 Class AA state finals.

"He is an outstanding football player," Curtis said. "I wish he lived around here."

Solid honorable mentions are Tyrrence Taylor, James "Blue" Davis, Melvin Demby, Phillip Townsend, Keith Henderson, Renard Cage, Scottie Cage, Kenny Cage, Charlie Johnson, Donald Walker, Gary Hawkins and Kendrick Harris.

Running backs are Nathaniel Williams, Keith Whitley and Darnell Jones.

Honorable mentions are Jerry Thomas, Charles Minor, Dyron Johnson, Otis Bates, Corey Gordon, Brennan Smith and Matthew Smith.

The offensive line consists of Gregory Moore, Derrick Moore, Tommy Atkins, Cedric Saulsberry, Derrick Minor, Darius Cain and Jerrell Hayes.

The tight end is Derrick Buford. Honorable mentions are Dra'Carl Walker and Rick Johnson.

Wide receivers are Danny Fletcher, Justin Burns and Bobby Ray Thompson. Honorable mentions are Wayne Minor, James C. Davis, Earl Banks, Reggie Lewis, Kerwin Cook and James Leonard, Lawrence Washington and Montrell Tennessee.

The defensive line is Walter Johnson, Anthony Moore, Francis Duncan, Anthony Paige and Robert Barber. Honorable mentions are Carlin Thomas, Roger Harbor, James Chest, Larry Rice, Calvin Green, Neal Harris, Eddie Blankenship, Jerry King, Jerry Edwards, Henry Ceasor, Willie Glasper and Kenzerick Hollins.

Linebackers are Stanley Smith, Jeremy Lawrence and Montago Tennessee. Honorable mentions are Reggie Melancon, Nathaniel Bates, Daniel Akins, Richard Bates Robert Skinner, Robert Skipper and Akeem Evans.

Defensive backs are Tyrrence Taylor Bobby Taylor, Calvin Jones and current Ferriday High assistant coach Cleothis Cummings. Honorable mentions are Jackie Thomas, Purcell Bethley, John Harris Adrian Bailey and LaKendrick Nix.

The kicker is Brennan Smith, while Dra'Carl Walker is the punter.

As with the All-Fairlcoth team, I'm sure I left some well-deserving names off the list. Heck, I'm still adding several names for the next All-Faircloth squad from looking back at other schools (sorry Jackie, you are still on the edge).

Maybe in a couple of years we can update it for the 40th anniversary. For now it's back to the grind. I'm sure Johnny "Red" Robertson and Bobby Marks can give me a hand with those Ferriday Bulldog and Huntington teams. And I know Walter Stampley will be more than happy to offer some advice on the pre-Faircloth teams. Until then, catch a high school game. And let me know who needs to be added down the road.
