Story Archives: Ferriday All-Bulldog team

Ferriday All-Bulldog team
by Joey Martin - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
Believe it or not, when Presbyterian minister J.C. Stokes began the idea of starting a football team at Ferriday High School in 1927, he was met with a whole lot of opposition from people who thought the sport was too rough.

Some 30 years later, the only thing that was tough was having Ferriday High on your schedule.

Stokes was a Presbyterian minister who led Winnfield High to a state championship.

Selecting an All-Ferriday Bulldog team (1927-69) was certainly no easy task. Just try picking the best from the decade of the 1950s when Johnny "Red" Robertson led the Bulldogs to four straight titles and 54 straight games without a loss. LSU head coach Paul Dietzel was a regular visitor to the school.

Everyone knows about those teams, but how about the 1944 Bulldog team which lost to Slidell 14-6 in the Class B state finals or the 1962 Ferriday team which lost to New Iberia 13-0 in the Class A championship game?

Ferriday went 3-4 in its first year of 1927. In 1928, Ferriday went 6-2-2. The Bulldogs were led by J.O. "Otts" Wilson, a guard who was nicknamed "The Barefoot Wonder." Ferriday actually lost a game to LSU's freshman team (The Kittens), 18-0.

As with the other teams, a player could not be named on both sides of the ball, although about 75 percent of the players on this team could have been named on offense and defense.

At quarterback on the All-Bulldog team is James "Red" McNew with Bobby Glenn Harmon a close second.

Honorable mentions are Robert Cherry and Don Horton.

The running backs are Guy Hill, Ronald Jeter, Donnie Daye, Ronnie Magoun and Donald Fulford. There is no way I could pick two.

Honorable mentions are Jimmy Marks, Bob Clayton, Alvie Alford Bobby Jones, Arch Turner, Bobby Marks, Dennis Jones, Buddy Lancaster, Freddie Marks, Joey Price Austin Wilson and Tommy Brasher.

Offensive lineman are Frank Brocato, Manson Nelson, James Joplin, James Cowart, James Poole, and C.C. Rabb

Honorable mentions are George Moffett, Mike Rabb, Joe Hayes, James Honea, Cotton Jones, Sam Wactor and Charles Fatchett.

Ends are Buddy Long, Russell Wagoner and Tony Brocato.

Honorable mentions are Charles Loomis, Phillip Welsh, Victor Cross, Ernest Crum, Gene Brooks, Vernon Traxler and Harry Pankey.

Defensive linemen are Neil Minor, Robert Campbell, Robert Barber, Charles Fugler and Leo Young.

Honorable mentions are Stan Strobel, Mickey Richards, Jessie Griffin, Jamie Kinney, Billy Nelson, George Fields, Larry Matulich and Larry Chauvin.

Linebackers are Max Fugler, Alan Watkins, Ronnie Kemp and J.D. Martin

Honorable mentions are Bud Wilson, H.L. Irvin, Horace Speed and Gene Loomis.

Defensive backs are Richard Jones, Clyde Ray Webber, Tommy Purvis and Wilburn King.

Honorable mentions are Carl Chapman, Jerry Don Arnold, Chucky Green, Gary Jackson, and George West.

The punter is Mark McIntosh, while the kicker is Webber.
