October 11: Film Festival
"Louisiana Hayride - Cradle of the Stars"

October 18: Native sons, Hezekiah Early and Hiram F. "Pete" Gregory, PhD, will present a program on the role of Ferriday and the development of the Blues tradition in the Delta region. There will be music to entertain and teach, and discussion of the development of the Ferriday music and community roots. Ferriday is a typical Delta town and a number of musical traditions are welded together there. "Hezekiah and the House Rockers" represent the best of that tradition. The roles played by musicians like Pee Wee Whittaker, Bud Scott and others will be highlighted and placed in historical perspective. 7 p.m.
October 23-December 5: Smithsonian Traveling Exhibition. "New Harmonies: Celebrating American Roots Music."
October 26: Richard Hood. PhD. from University of Louisiana at Monroe will present a lecture and demonstration based on his extensive research in the life and music of Chet Atkins. Dr. Hood is an accomplished musician and has performed in the Country Music Hall of Fame. This will be a Sunday afternoon performance. 3 p.m.
November 1: Ethnomusicologist and Folklorist Joyce Marie Jackson, PhD, from Louisiana State University will introduce, moderate, and provide a public discussion with a performance by the Winnsboro Easter Rock Ensemble. Together, they will demonstrate its sacred Easter ritual featuring folk spirituals reflecting African and Caribbean influences. This presentation will explore the history and cultural tradition of people of African heritage in early Louisiana. 7 p.m.
November 8: Regional Folklorist Susan Roach, PhD, from Louisiana Tech University will introduce and moderate a public discussion with noted blues musicians "Po Henry and Tookie" performing "Delta Blues." This blues duo from Rayville received the 2005 Louisiana Governor's Arts Award for Folk Artist of the Year and has performed at the Smithsonian Festival of American Folklife and New Orleans Jazz Fest. With Henry Dorsey on guitar and Wayne "Tookie" Collom on harmonica, they perform traditional "Delta Blues" learned growing up in north Louisiana cotton country. 7 p.m.
November 14: Field Scholar Joe Cook and the "Joe Cook Family Band" will introduce and moderate an informational performance by demonstrating the story of Blue Grass Gospel roots music and its affect on our culture through the different periods of the music evolution in the South. The Cook family is a noted Blue Grass family and received the Beacon Award with Kim Cook receiving the Female Vocalist of the Year Award from Emerald Coast Gospel Music Awards this year. 7 p.m.
November 22: Lynette Tanner, scholar, and Sylvia Johns-Ritchie. musician, with vocals, Robert Sasser. Glen McGlothin. Lansing Brakenridge. Edrena Lyons, and Willie Minor will introduce, moderate and perform various genres of music from the 1800 slave period through the Rock'N'Roll era with an performance titled "Journey Through The South with Song." This performance carries the listener through various genres of music such as mournful slave songs. Spirituals, Jazz, Ragtime, Blues, Country and Western, Rock N Roll, etc. and their introduction into the South, 7 p.m.
November 29: Regional Folklorist Susan Roach. PhD. from Louisiana Tech University, will introduce a public discussion with noted Rock'N'Roll entertainer Kenny "Bill" Stinson from West Monroe. A frequent performer at the New Orleans Jazz Fest and the Louisiana Folklife Festival, Stinson also has performed at the Smithsonian Festival of American Folklife. They will explore the connections of old time country, the blues, and gospel Music of Northeast Louisiana that helped give birth to rockabilly. His performance will feature the 1950s and 1960s rockabilly music made famous by Ferriday Louisiana's native son, Jerry Lee Lewis. 7 p.m. |
