Story Archives: Vidalia welcomes Bunkie

Vidalia welcomes Bunkie
by Joey Martin - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
Vidalia High looks to snap a two-game losing streak and get off to a good start in District 3-3A as the Vikings host Bunkie Friday at Dee Faircloth Viking Field.

Bunkie is 3-1, dropping its first game last week in a 20-14 loss to Episcopal in double overtime.

"We played a decent ballgame," said Bunkie head coach Bruce Webb. "We are young on defense and need to cut down on our mental mistakes."

Vidalia fell to Bunkie 21-14 last year after having two punts blocked and mishandling the snap on another.

The Panthers are led by quarterback Kendrick Leary, who is adept at running and passing the ball.

Leary had 101 yards rushing and 75 yards passing against Episcopal.

"I have a lot of respect for their program," Webb said. "Dee Faircloth is a great coach and they are going to give us a battle. It ought to be a good game."

Webb said the fact it's the district opener for both teams adds more to the contest.

"I think Buckeye has the edge over everybody, but anybody who isn't ready to play in this district will get beat," he said. "We struggle against offenses like Vidalia's for some reason. We're not real big in places and don't seem to handle the running game real well. Both teams will be looking to win to start off on the right."
