VIDALIA UTILITY CUSTOMERS TO GET 12 PERCENT RATE DECEASE

With what seems like only negative news nationwide, the City of Vidalia was able to pass on some good news to utility customers Tuesday night at the city meeting. City Manager Ken Walker announced a 12 percent across-the-board reduction in utility rates beginning with the next billing cycle.

FERRIDAY INFRASTRUCTURE UPGRADES SET FOR WATER SYSTEM

Ferriday Mayor Glen McGlothin told town council members Tuesday that Concordia Water Works (CWW) cannot sell water to the town, putting to an end one idea being pursued to provide better water for town residents. "They (CWW) just don't have enough surplus," McGlothin said during Tuesday's meeting of the Ferriday Town Council. "They have a clarifier out and are not going to be able to help us."

PROPERTY, BUILDING ISSUES HIGHLIGHT POLICE JURY MEETING

The Concordia Parish Police Jury wants to develop more checks and balances in protecting property buyers from unscrupulous developers and will seek assistance from the Clerk of Court and Assessor. "We don't want to create a bureaucracy, but are trying to figure out a way to find out when subdivisions or developments are being laid out at the outset," said juror Randy Temple. "We want to be in the loop."

VIDALIA CENTER DEDICATION THURSDAY; SEN. LANDRIEU TO ATTEND

The official grand opening of the Vidalia Conference and Convention Center is slated for 3:30 p.m. Thursday. U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu will take part in the ceremony after first meeting with area farmers to discuss hurricane damage to crops and proposed federal assistance.

COCKERHAM RECOVERING FOLLOWING BUS ACCIDENT

Concordia Parish bus driver James Cockerham is recovering this week at University Medical Center in Jackson, Miss. Cockerham was transported to UMC with severe injuries following a two-vehicle crash on the morning of Oct. 8 involving a Durham Services bus and a City of Vidalia garbage truck.
