VIDALIA CENTER NAMED IN HONOR OF HAMMETT

Grand opening ceremonies were held Thursday for Vidalia's new conference and convention center which was named in honor of former Rep. Bryant Hammett, who served as chairman of the House Ways & Means Committee.

LANDRIEU PLEDGES PUSH ON FARM AIR

U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu met with approximately 50 local farmers and bankers following the grand opening of the Bryant O. Hammett Conference and Convention Center last week to discuss agricultural woes following Hurricane Gustav and Hurricane Ike.

RISER VIEWS HIGHWAYS AT FERRIDAY CHAMBER MEETING

State Sen. Neil Riser told the Ferriday Chamber of Commerce Tuesday that he and State Rep. Andy Anders of Ferriday are continuing efforts to four-lane U.S. 84 from Ferriday to Jonesville. "We do have turning lanes in Jonesville and that is good," Riser said. "But it is important for us to be able to connect Hy 84 and 28 to Hwy. 165."

EARLY VOTING BRISK AS ELECTION DAY NEARS

Early voting for the November 4th general election was brisk Tuesday with 170 votes counted thus far including mail-in votes and 134 in-person votes.

The lawyer for convicted murderer Connor Wood, 17, withdrew his motion last week for a new trial and recusal of the trial judge.

CHARGES AGAINST CLAYTON POLICE CHIEF QUASHED

Charges of malfeasance in office and public bribery were quashed in Seventh Judicial District Court last week against Clayton Police Chief Clarence "Papa" Skipper.
