Great weekend ahead in SEC

Don't even try and compare Saturday's Ohio State-Penn State matchup to the SEC Championship Game.

That's what a couple of talking heads did during a couple of blowout games this past weekend. I guess they had nothing else to talk about.

Sure, Saturday's Ohio State-Penn State game is by all accounts going to decide the Big 10 championship. That's because they won't have to play each other again.

In the SEC, you could have LSU and Florida playing a second time for a championship, or Alabama playing Georgia a second time for a championship.

That's a huge difference.

And this is after playing an SEC schedule.

Meanwhile, Penn State has faced the nation's 100th toughest schedule so far. Penn State opponents have won 38% of their games. Compare that to Oklahoma, whose opponents have won 71% of their games.

But you can't always go by records.

I guarantee you nobody wants to play Ole Miss right now.

This Saturday, LSU hosts Georgia in an afternoon game. I picked Florida to beat LSU because I did not feel the Gators had played their best game of the season. That could not be said after the LSU game.

I don't believe LSU has still put together a complete effort this season.

If they want to beat a real good Georgia team they will certainly have to put forth their best effort to date - none of this waiting until the second half to play.

It was good to see Keiland Williams returning to form and the Tiger defensive secondary seems to finally be playing up to its potential.

I'm still waiting on a breakout game from Chad Jones. And LSU needs a healthy Darry Beckwith at linebacker.

It's going to be an interesting week in the SEC this week - OK, make that more interesting than usual.

Besides Georgia coming to LSU for the first time since beating the Tigers beat the Bulldogs 17-10 in 2003, there are a handful of contests with all kinds of intersting storylines.

It starts Thursday as Auburn travels to West Virginia. The headlines in Auburn this week surround true freshman quarterback Barrett Trotter and whether he will lose his redshirt after seven games. Trotter does have an understanding of the spread offense and has impressed Auburn's defensive coaches. The War Eagles certainly need something positive to happen in a disappointing year to date.

And Tommy Tuberville got in a nice swipe at LSU during his press conference Monday discussing his desire to stay at Auburn and that he did not have a stroke as rumors persist about his health.

"We're not playing good right now," Tuberville said. "This is a transition year but we're going to get better. I don't know whether we'll win any of these last five games but I'll tell you one thing, all you got to do is look back at the first seven. We led every game at halftime. Some things didn't work out in the second half but we fought hard in every game. We played well. We hadn't been beat by 30 points. There's time when you'd think we'd lost that game by three or four touchdowns and it came down to basically the last play or so"

Alabama travels to Tennessee. The only thing that has to be upsetting Vol fans more than their inconsistent play is the fact Alabama is unbeaten. This is certainly a bitter rivalry that doesn't promise to get any nicer with the success of the Crimson Tide.

Ole Miss travels to Fayetteville to play Arkansas where Houston Nutt has to be licking his chops to silence the 'Sooiieee-pig' sounds coming from the stands.

Something tells me the Rebels will not have the mental breakdowns against the Razorbacks that have cost them several games this season.

Kentucky goes to Florida and the Gators need a good effort to keep up with Southern California.

Then again, Florida could beat the Miami Dolphins by three touchdowns and Southern Cal could squeeze by Kiddy Kottage U. and they would still have trouble keeping up with the Trojans in the polls.

Duke travels to Vanderbilt and who would have thought this game would have as much meaning as it will on Saturday.

It's going to be another wild week in the SEC. But we would not expect anything less.
