Monterey boys tip off with win

Monterey High's boys scored 21 points in the second quarter and held off a late Georgetown rally to defeat the Bulldogs 43-41 in its season-opener at Georgetown Tuesday.

"That was a good game for our young guys," said Monterey coach Jeffrey Odom. "Anytime you can win a close game you mature real quick. And it is hard to beat Georgetown in Georgetown."

Monterey trailed the Bulldogs 11-5 after one period, but outscored the home team 21-10 in the second period for a 26-12 advantage. Senior Austin Lipsey scored 11 of his 16 points in the quarter, while 6-5 sophomore Josh Chapman added five of his 16.

"Austin played his best game I have seen him play," Odom said. "He shot the ball well and did a lot of the little things that don't who up on the stats. Andrew Harp also did a good job off the bench when our starting point guard got in foul trouble. This was a good win for us and a good way to start the season."

Dalton Hearon scored 30 points for Georgetown, hitting eight 3-pointers.

"He is unbelievable," Odom said. "We couldn't stop him, but shut down the other players."

The Lady Wolves fell to Georgetown 48-39. Monterey trailed 22-16 at halftime.

Brooke Baker and Ellen Bairnsfather led Monterey with nine points each.

Monterey competes in the Atlanta Tournament beginning Thursday.
