Ten percent vote early in Concordia
by Stanley Nelson - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
Clerk of Court Clyde Ray Webber predicted a high turnout Tuesday for the November 4 general election following a heavy early voting period in Concordia when about 10 percent of the electorate cast ballots.

"I think we'll see a 65 to 70 percent turnout," said Webber, "which will be really high for us. Hopefully, it'll be even better. Early voting was strong and steady. A lot will depend on election day weather."

Polls open at 6 a.m. and close at 8 p.m.

The Registrar of Voters office reported that 1,350 votes -- about 10 percent of the registered voters in the parish -- were tallied through Tuesday, the last day to early vote. The figure included 1,211 in-person votes and 139 mail-in votes.

That compares to 873 early votes tallied during early voting period for the October 4 primary, including 767 in-person and 106 mail-in votes.

In Catahoula, 772 early votes were tallied through this morning at the Registrar of Voters in Harrisonburg for the November 4 election, including 632 in-person votes and 140 by mail. That compares with 562 early votes for the October primary, including 390 in-person votes and 172 by mail.

In Tensas, 694 early votes were tallied for Tuesday's election.

Registrars can receive and count any mail ballots through Monday, November 3, and can receive and count military and overseas ballots on election day.

Concordia has 13,698 voters eligible to cast ballots in the upcoming election, up slightly from the 13,639 voters eligible to vote in the October primary election.

According to the Secretary State's office, those who voted early in this area included:

Concordia: 929 white, 405 black, 155 other; 618 male, 732 female; 778 Democrat, 417 Republican, 155 other.
