Story Archives: Lady Trojans fielding veteran team

Lady Trojans fielding veteran team
by Joey Martin - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
Ferriday High Lady Trojan coach Lisa Abron doesn't believe her team will forget its 65-62 double overtime loss to St. Thomas Aquinas in the second round of the playoffs at Ferriday in February.

And just to make sure, she's leaving a reminder.

"On the first day of practice I ran off a copy of the newspaper article against St. Thomas Aquinas and hung it on the door," Abron said. "I want them to remember what happened and use that for motivation."

The good news this season is that Abron returns her entire starting unit from that 29-6 team.

"We're excited about this year," Abron said. "We've got a veteran team and they have matured a lot. They know what it takes. We had a good summer and played against some good people. We hit the weights hard with the new weight room and that should help our stamina and toughness. We're expecting to be a lot better."

The Lady Trojans are led by senior post players Jasmine Upchurch (6-foot-2) and Ja'Lessia Davis (6-foot-3).

Senior guard Atasia Banks returns after missing most of last year with a torn ACL.

Juniors are Jasmine Butler, Kia Jefferson, Raven Lewis, Deonka Birdon, Afrika Alexander, Brayondra Jefferson, Andrea Johnson and Ta'Keira White.

Sophomore Shanice Poole started as a freshman at point guard last season. Other sophomores are T'Keyah Fletcher, and Keatrice Brown. Freshmen are Keisho Hawkins and Morgan Stigall.

"We should have good depth and Atasia helps at the guard position," Abron said. "She's at about 80 percent now, but we're expecting her to contribute more down the road."

Abron said District 2-2A will be competitive.

"Just about all the teams were young last year," she said. "Lake Providence played us tough last season and we expect that again. We're not underestimating anyone."

Ferriday hosts its annual jamboree on Nov. 15.
