Story Archives: Henderson era begins at Ferriday

Henderson era begins at Ferriday

You might have a tough time finding a first-year high school boys basketball coach with a tougher job than what Glenn Henderson has at Ferriday High School.

Henderson was an assistant coach to K.G. Watkins last season when the Trojans advanced to the Class 2A state championship game, falling to St. Thomas Aquinas in the title contest.

But Henderson has a major rebuilding project as four starters on last season's team were starters.

"Big-time rebuilding," Henderson said. "Our underclassmen did not get a lot of playing time and we only have one junior and one sophomore. We've got three seniors we are going to be relying heavily on because they have been in the system for four years."

Seniors are Levier Pryor, DeMarco Lewis, Orlando Davis and Carlton Robinson.

"When we have the opportunity to run, we'll run," Henderson said. "But we're going to play smart. Everything we do will basically go through Levier and DeMarco."

Gary Willis is the lone junior, while Markell Bell is the sophomore.

Freshmen are Ted Gullage, Dan Garrison, Myron Duncan and Xavier Ellis.

"We have a big gap in experience and talent," Henderson said. "We're going to be experimenting early. By the time district comes around we can be good."

Henderson said he is enjoying his first head coaching job.

"I used to wonder why 'Blue' (former Ferriday High boys basketball coach and current Ferriday Junior High principal James Davis) talked about being tired all the time," Henderson said. "I understand now."
