Huntington runs by Claiborne
by Joey Martin - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
Huntington completed its MPSA District 6A schedule with a 44-22 win over Claiborne to cement its second place finish in the district with a 7-1 mark.

Huntington hosts Columbia Friday in its final regular season game before welcoming Newton Academy in a first-round playoff game on Nov. 7.

The win over Claiborne came on Homecoming night.

"We weren't real focused coming out," said Huntington coach Chad Harkins. "We had a lot of things going on. I was glad we got out of there wiht a win."

After Claiborne got on the board first, Huntington answered with two scores as Josh Lee scored on a 2-yard run and Jeremy Randall raced 65-yard TD run.

Claiborne scored on a pass play before Randall got loose again, racing 50 yards for the score to give the Hounds a 22-14 halftime advantage.

Randall, who finished with 173 yards rushing, scored on a 1-yard run in the third period and added a 62-yard punt return for a score in the third period.

Lee, who rushed for 101 yards, added a 2-yard TD run in the second half.

Huntington closes out its regular season riday with a home game against Columbia (Ms.) Academy.

The Cougars are 2-7, but compete in Class 2A in a district with Brookhaven, Simpson and Copiah and have lost to such teams as Centreville, Bowling Green and Oak Forest.

"They are not as bad as their record indicates," Harkins said. "They are a good football team. They are not fast, but they are real big."

Huntington has played at Wayne Academy the last two years in first round playoff games. The Hounds beat Wayne and Central Hinds last year before falling to Glenbrook in the South State finals.

Huntington lost to Glenbrook during the regular season in district play.

"Last year we lost to Oak Forest in the final game, but we did go out and execute," Harkins said. "We want to go out and perform the way we are capable of performing. We still haven't played up to our capability. We've been real inconsistent. We need to be a little crisper this week and we want to work on some things to get ready for the playoffs."
