Funeral services for Sister Ruby Lee Fleming Ellis of Lake Charles were held Saturday, October 25, 2008, 2 p.m. at New Covenant Faith Baptist Church with Rev. Jimmy Stevens officiating.

On Tuesday, October 21, 2008, at 3:05 p.m., St. Luke's Hospital in Houston, TX, Jesus called Sister Ruby Lee Fleming Ellis home for her final resting place for peace and rest in Heaven. Sister Ruby Lee Fleming Ellis was born October 31, 1954, to the late Brother Sy Fleming and Mrs. Flora Fleming of Ferriday.

Sister Ellis was educated in the town of Ferriday, where she graduate from Ferriday High School in 1972. She later went to college to pursue a degree in elementary education. Her college education began in 1972 at Grambling State University, North Louisiana University and McNeese State University, where she received a Bachelor of Science degree and Master's Degree in English education. Sister Ellis was also employed at McNeese for more than 30 years in the Registrar's Office. Her primary duties were graduation, degree requirements and issuance of diplomas at graduation. She began her employment with the State of Louisiana in the early 1970's at Moss Regional Hospital.

At an early age, she was baptized in Ferriday at Morning Star Alley where she was under the leadership of Rev. T. J. Howell. Sister Ruby and her family were members of Mount Olive Baptist church for over 30 years. She also served as a deaconess. Sister Ruby later moved her membership to New Covenant Faith Baptist Church under the pastorship of Rev. Jimmy Stevens where she worked in the youth department of the church. She loved her pastor and church at New Covenant and the church always showed great love, care and compassion towards she and her family.

Sister Ruby also loved her community. She expressed this in her church work and in her community service organization. One of these organizations she loved and worked tirelessly with was Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. She pledged the sorority while attending Northeast Louisiana University. She remained active until she was called home. She attended many conferences, workshops and seminars under the direction of Alpha Kappa Alpha.

She was active for many years in the promotion of the Martin Luther King Coalition Festival in Lake Charles, where she worked along with her husband, Charles C. Ellis, Jr. She worked in the promotion and establishment of many of the activities of the festival including the Martin Luther King Parade, Easter egg hunt, talent show and Martin Luther King Legacy.

Sister Ruby Lee Fleming Ellis leaves to mourn her immediate family: her husband of 35 years, Brother Charles C. Ellis, Jr.; children, Mrs. Danielle Ellis-Simon (Carl) of Houston, Mr. Charles C. Ellis III (Neosha) of Killeen, TX, and her son, Mr. Mark C. Ellis of Lake Charles; brother, Sam Houston of Houston; sister, Hazel Billups of Galveston, TX; brother, Sy Fleming Jr., of Lake Charles; grandchildren, Brooke C. Simon, Carl Simon Jr., both of Houston, and Charles C. Ellis IV of Killeen. Relatives of the immediate family Danny M. Ellis, Jerry A. Ellis, Corrine Walker, Carolyn Ellis and Malcolm Earl Ellis of Seattle, WA, and her loving uncle, Robert Harbor Sr., his daughter, Elaine; grandson, Robert Harbor III and Brother Percy Tennessee.
