Obama deserves opportunity to serve
Though we did not support Barack Hussein Obama's candidacy to become the 44th president of the United States, we wish him well as he makes the transition from serving as the junior senator from Illinois to Commander in Chief.
Every new president faces tremendous challenges. The situation Obama finds himself today is no different, especially in light of the stability of the American economy and the country's commitment to a war on terror. Tough decisions will have to be made.
Obama, though, is due a honeymoon, so to speak. In other words, Obama deserves a period of time in which his detractors, including this publication, should allow the 46-year-old president-elect an opportunity to embark freely on a path to implement his policies and his proposals, which he believes America should embrace.
We are not suggesting Obama should be given a green light to do whatever it is he may wish to do as the first African-American president in the history of the Republic. Instead, we are simply saying he should be given an opportunity to lead without having to look over his shoulder at every turn to refute criticism his naysayers may lob in his direction.
Yet, we are reminded of the rhetoric Obama spewed on the campaign trail, rhetoric that invited America to engage in class warfare at the expense of the people who already pay a super majority of the taxes that fuel the U.S. government. If Obama insists in pursuing his so-called "spread the wealth" proposal, claims that he will serve all Americans will be for naught.
We are hopeful, however, that the conciliatory demeanor Obama exhibited Tuesday night during his speech to the American people was a signal he will indeed serve every American with honor and distinction. |
