Shannon James Gremillion will take over the Third Circuit judgeship presently held by his father following a 422-vote victory Tuesday night for the 1st District, Division C post, which includes eight parishes..

Gremillion carried five parishes to defeat Triston Knoll of Avoyelles Parish, who led in three parishes. Gremillion recorded 57,535 votes (50.18%) districtwide to 57,113.

Gremillion tallied 66 percent of the vote in Concordia Parish and carried Catahoula, Grant, Rapides and Sabine, while Knoll carried Avoyelles, LaSalle and Natchitoches.

In Concordia, Gremillion carried early voting and all 21 precincts, garnering 5,339 votes to 2,697.

Knoll said he wishes Gremillion "the best in his new endeavor and Godspeed. I congratulate him on his victory. I thank all those people who supported me through the eight parishes who worked tirelessly and gave it their heart and soul. I thank them from the bottom of my heart."

Gremillion will fill the unexpired term of his father, Judge Glenn Gremillion, which expires in 2016. The senior Gremillion, 62, was elected to the Third Circuit in 1995. He announced his retirement last spring.

Twelve judges sit on panels in each of the state's five judicial circuits.
