Bus driver to be ticketed

The driver of a bus for the Concordia Parish school system will be cited for failure to maintain proper control in connection with an October 8 crash, according to Police Chief Ronnie G. "Tapper" Hendricks.

Both the Vidalia Police Department and the Louisiana State Police reconstruction team investigated the accident that sent the driver, 45 students and two occupants of a Vidalia garbage truck to the hospital for assorted injuries.

The bus driver, James Cockerham of Vidalia, was airlifted to University Medical Center in Jackson, MS, for treatment of serious injuries.

The bus collided with the rear of the city garbage truck, sending the truck some 115 feet into a utility pole in the early morning accident. The bus reportedly traveled about 40 feet from the point of impact, ultimately hitting a utility pole.

The joint police investigation found no evidence at the crash site that the school bus driver attempted to stop the bus before it collided with the rear of the Vidalia garbage truck. The investigators also found that the brake lights on the garbage truck and the brakes on the school bus were working properly at the time of the crash.
