Voters approve CCOA four-mill tax; split on amendments

Concordia voters approved a four-mill tax for the Concordia Council on Aging (CCOA), while parish voters went with the trend statewide in supporting amendments one through three, but rejecting four through seven.

In the parishwide millage election, parish voters approved the tax 3,843 (53%) for to 3,277 (46.03%) against.

The tax won in the early voting count and was approved in 11 of the parish's 21 precincts.

"I'm happy the folks in Concordia Parish care about the elderly," said CCOA Executive Director Dorothy McDonald. "We'll be doing as much as we can as soon as we can, but don't know when the millage money will start to come in."

The millage will generate an estimated $400,000 a year and enable CCOA to offset skyrocketing costs and increased demand for services to a growing population of 60 and older residents in Concordia Parish, said McDonald.

The breakdown in the statewide and parishwide voting on the seven amendments was as follows:

No. 1: Establish term limits for members of state boards and commissions.

Statewide:

497,205 (31%) AGAINST

Concordia:

4,528 (64.89%) FOR

2,450 (35.11%) AGAINST

No. 2: Require two additional days of notice before calling a special legislative session.

Statewide:

Concordia:

4,167 (61.20%) FOR

2,642 (38.80%) AGAINST

No. 3: Allow a temporary successor to be appointed for legislators called to active military duty.

4,004 (59.14%) FOR

No. 4: Redistribute state severance tax revenue.
