Block defeats St. Mary's
by Joey Martin - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
Block High School outscored St. Mary's 21-0 in the second half Thursday as the Bears rolled past the Tigers 41-14 in Natchitoches.

"We had a botched punt return and made some mistakes, but we were able to move the ball," said Block coach Benny Vault. "We didn't have any problems in the second half. It was different playing on Thursday and we're glad to have that behind us."

St. Mary's scored first on a short pass before the Bears responeded with a 24-yard touchdown pass from Curdarius Johnson to A.J. Calhoun.

Travis Baldwin added the kick to tie the game at 7-7 with 5:11 remaining in the first half.

Late in the first quarter, the Bears took a 14-7 lead as VaShawn Davis scored on a 1-yard run.

Block added to its lead early in the second period as John Bloodsaw scored on a 42-yard run.

St. Mary's cut the Bear lead to 20-14 at halftime as Tiger quarterback Michael Lott scored on a 3-yard run.

It was all Bears in the second half as Bloodsaw, who finished with 172 rushing yards on the night, had a 75-yard TD run in the final period.

Hunter Key scored on a 59-yard run in the third period, while Johnson added a 4-yard TD run in the final period.

Block, which finished 3-1 in district, visits Lakeview Friday.

Lakeview is coached by Michael Nicholson, who is the son of former Block assistant footbal coach Raymond Nicholson.

"They are struggling a bit, but we are their homecoming game," Vault said. "They run the same type offense we do. We just need to go out and work on the things we do. We need to work more on the timing of our passing game. We started out passing well, but it has dropped off a bit. We need to improve in that area."
