Story Archives: Ferriday, Lake Providence play for playoffs

Ferriday, Lake Providence play for playoffs
by Joey Martin - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
With Lake Providence sitting at No. 29 in the Class 2A power ratings and Ferriday currently at No. 36 it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out how big Friday's game at Melz Field is for both teams.

And while playoffs are nothing new at Ferriday High, Lake Providence is not accustomed to having something to play for the final week of the regular season.

"We have to make sure we are well prepared and ready to play," said Ferriday head coach Freddie Harrison.

Lake Providence is 4-5 overall and 1-2 in district, but the Panthers upset Jonesboro-Hodge and took Sterlington to overtime before falling 32-26.

"I think we are both in a must-win situation," said Lake Providence head coach Sonny Nason. "You win and go to the playoffs or you lose and it's basketball season. Hopefully our kids will find enough incentive from the fact they can be the first team to make the playoffs at Lake Providence in 25 years. I'm hoping that's how they are wanting to be remembered."

Ferriday is 4-5 and seeking its first district win.

"Ferriday has a really good football team and they are going to be physical," Nason said. "We have to protect the football and not make mistakes."

The Panthers are led by freshman quarterback Lamar Carraway, who was 16-of-30 for 206 yards against Sterlington and ran in a couple of touchdowns,

"Lamar has done a good job, he has passed for more than 200 yards the past two weeks, but he is still a freshman," Nason said. "He has gotten better during the year."

"He's a little waterbug," Harrison said. "He has a heckuva an arm and we have to make sure we slow him down."

Harrison said it is time for all phases of the game to come together as one unit.

"I know we can play, we just have to get it together for one given night," he said. "We have to have a sense of awareness of what we are doing."

The playoff seedings for all classes will be released Sunday.
