Upchurch signs with Northwestern
Ferriday High Lady Trojan senior Jasmine Upchurch signed with Northwestern State University today (Wednesday) on the first day of the signin period.
Upchurch chose Northwestern State over Louisiana-Monroe and Louisiana-Lafayette.
"Jasmine got along real well with the team at Northwestern and really liked the campus," said Upchurch's mother and Lady Trojan head basketball coach Lisa Abron. "She said they have new dormitories that are very nice and she liked the coaching staff a whole lot. She had visited three or four different places, but this really felt at home at Northwestern."
Jasmine's older brother, Josh Upchurch, orginally signed with Northwestern State, but is currently playing at Lee Junior College in Baytown, Texas.
"I think that was another reason for Jasmine signing with Northwestern, they both wanted to be at the same school," Abron said.
The 6-foot-2 Upchurch, the 2008 Parish Player of the Year, averaged 18.7 points a game and 10.7 rebounds.
"The college game is a whole new level and Jasmine will have to be a lot more aggressive," Abron said. "When you are big in high school you tend not to push yourself as much. But in college everybody can play. She'll really have to step up to the challenge and be a little more aggressive."
Abron said Northwestern is looking at Upchurch at the No. 3 and No. 4 positions.
"They feel lke she shoots the ball well from the outside," Abron said. |
