Mangham advances to second round Mangham High has used the big play on offense to account for most of its wins this season.
But in a first-round playoff contest Friday in Mangham, it was a big play on defense that got the Dragons going in an eventual 31-6 win over White Castle in a Class A contest.
"White Castle has a good football team, very athletic" said Mangham coach Bo Meeks. "We didn't finish off some drives early, but we got the big play with the interception that kind of jump-startd us. The defense played well the entire game."
Mangham, seeded No. 6 in Class A, hosts Gueydan Friday in a second-round contest.
With Mangham leading 3-0 following a field goal by Kyle King, Montel Hardin intercepted a pass and returned it 65 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter that allowed the Dragons to go into the lockerroom at halftime with a 10-0 lead.
Following a scoreless third quarter, Mangham put the game away in the final period with three touchdowns as Michael Holland went in from two yards out, Shaquille Ausberry scored on a 10-yard run and Josh Wilson added a 6-yard scamper. Johnathan Harrison led Mangham, with 67 yards on five carries, while Edward Blunt had 51 yards on 10 rushes.
Wilson was 10-of-19-for 73 yards with no picks for the Dragons.
Gueydan, seeded No. 22, defeated South Cameron, 30-12.
"Gueydan has a really good running back and they have good skilled players on both sides of the ball," Meeks said. "At this stage, everybody in the playoffs if good. We just have to go out and execute and not turn the ball over."
The winner of Friday's game faces the winner of the Delhi Charter-Delcambre contest in the quarterfinals. |
