It's been another strange year
If there weren't any surprises during the football season, then there wouldn't be a whole lot of fun in watching.
Sometimes surprise is good (Texas Tech has been fun to watch this year), and sometimes surprise is bad (LSU allowing a combined 103 points to Georgia and Florida before trailing Troy, yes Troy, 31-3 at Tiger Stadium).
I know one thing, I'm not putting any more stock into the LSU spring game.
Richard Murphy was the leading rusher in that contest wtih 145 yards, while Jarrett Lee finished up 7-of-13 for 184 yards and two TDs and NO interceptions.
LSU White defeated LSU Purple 38-10.
Lee was 6-of-8 for 171 yards wtih two TDs for the White, while he finished 1-of-5 for six yards for the Purple.
The Purple Lee started against Troy, while the White Lee finished up the final quarter.
But don't put it all on Lee, the receivers have not lived up to their preseason billing and the defense has certainly been a disappointment going into the Alabama game.
It's been a strange year all across the SEC. Then again you knew we were in for a wacky year when Auburn beats Mississippi State by a 3-2 score.
Certainly Alabama surprised a few folks who thought they were a year or two away from being contenders.
Georgia came into the season ranked No. 1 in the country. Part of that may have been the fact Hawaii was getting way too much respect last year.
No matter what color jersey the Dawgs decided to come out in this season, they have been short of playing like the top team in the land.
Steve Spurrier was expected to make some noise in South Carolina. I think that may have been a sick rooster.
Sylvester Croom has found out what's its like to be taken serious in the SEC. And it hasn't been good.
Ole Miss is probably the best 5-4 team in the nation, with a two-point loss to Wake Forest, six-point to Vanderbilt when the Commodores were flying high, and a four-point loss to Alabama.
That's probably about as omforting as watching Warren Sapp tap dance, but the Rebels have a lot more to build on than the other major colleges in their state.
Philip Fulmer is out at Tennessee and who would have thought Rocky Top fans would be talking basketball in October?
There's still a couple of week remaining in the regular season.I'm sure there will be a couple of more surprises before we put the cap back on this one. |
