Story Archives: Bike sign-up starts December 1 at CPSO

Bike sign-up starts December 1 at CPSO

Applications for repaired bicycles will be taken at the Concordia Parish Sheriff's Office from Monday, December 1, to Friday, December 12, at the CPSO receptionist's desk, Room 7, second floor of the parish courthouse, 4001 Carter St., Vidalia.

The bikes will be distributed the parish's less fortunate children the week of December 15 to 19.

Used bikes and tricycles have been arriving steadily at the Sheriff's Office for the past several weeks and Sheriff Randy Maxwell is hoping there are enough bikes to fill the expected wish lists.

The Sheriff pointed out that this is a simple gesture that has no extra costs attached for the donor. "It will take just a minute to check yards and garages. Many times there's an old bike or two that no one has used in years. Even if it's a little rusty, we can fix that up and make a child happy."

Inmates at the Concordia Parish Jail are repairing the used bikes and other riding toys just as fast as they are dropped off. Anyone having a used bicycle, tricycle, wagon or other riding toy which can be repaired -- or one that can just be used for spare parts -- may drop it off behind the Concordia Parish Courthouse any time during the day or early evening hours.

Monetary donations are also accepted for paint and other supplies. These contributions may be mailed to: CPSO Bike Program, Concordia Parish Sheriff's Office, 4001 Carter St., Rm. 7, Vidalia, LA 71373.

The Concordia Parish Sheriff's Office Holiday Bike Program is a tradition dating back to the early years of Sheriff Maxwell's administration in the 1990s.
