Horse hit by truck on Hwy. 84

A Vidalia man driving a dually pickup collided with a horse on Hwy. 84 between Ferriday and Vidalia Tuesday morning, totaling the truck and killing the animal.

Roy Reyes of Ferriday, the driver, was not injured.

Reyes said he said considered driving his Toyota to work Tuesday morning, but was glad he opted to drive his dually truck instead.

As Reyes passed through Ridgecrest heading east toward Vidalia around 5:15 a.m., he saw a horse standing in the median.

"It was right before I got to Lakeside Ford and he moved into the outside lane and I hit my brakes trying to miss him, but I couldn't do it," Reyes said. "It totaled my truck, but if I would have been in my Toyota he would have probably come through my windshield. I wasn't driving fast because I'm always scared a deer will come out on the highway. The horse was black and white and blended in with the darkness."

The Concordia Parish Sheriff's Office received a report at 3:40 a.m. that horses were in the highway

Deputy Stephen Karabellen reported the horses were in a field near Cowan Street and one of the horses ran by his car and broke the mirror off of his unit.

Reyes became the next victim less than two hours later.

"Thank goodness I was in my dually," he said.

Curtis Wrecker towed Reyes' truck, while a crew with the Louisiana Department of Transportation & Development removed the horse just before 8 a.m.
