Vidalia boys, Ferriday girls win

The weather outside was frightening, but Vidalia and Ferriday paid little heed as the parish rivals competed in a regular scheduled contest at Ferriday High Tuesday.

The stormy weather cut short the girls basketball game, won by the Lady Trojans 45-24, while the Vidalia boys got off to a quick start on their way to a 67-51 win.

The boys win was a contrast to Vidalia's 60-50 win over Ferriday in the finals of the Ronnie Brown Memorial Tournament Saturday at Vidalia in which Ferriday jumped out to a 9-0 lead before Vidalia came back to win the contest.

Tuesday night, Vidalia jumped out the the quick lead, leading 11-2 early and led 23-8 after one period of play.

"We got off to a fast start, but had trouble hanging on later," said Vidalia coach Robert Sanders. "We're still looking for that complete game and putting teams away when we have the chance. Our point guards are getting better running the team and hopefully we can get everything down pact by the time we get to district."

The Vikings outscored the Trojans 21-14 in the second period and led 44-22 at halftime before Ferriday cut that lead to 58-42 going into the final period and pulled to within 10 in the final quarter.

Quartrell Thomas led Vidalia with 23 points. Torrey Dixon added 15 for the Vikings, while Gary Stewart netted 11.

Ferriday was led by Carlton Robinson and DeMarco Lewis with 16 points each.

In the girls contest, Ferriday's pressure defense kept Vidalia from attempting a shot over the first six minutes of the game and scoring a basket until late in the first period as Ferriday scored the first 12 points of the game and led 17-2 after one period of play.

Both teams scored 11 points in the second period as the Lady Trojans led 28-13 at halftime.

Ferriday outscored Vidalia 17-11 in the third period before the lights went out and the game was called after three periods.

Jasmine Upchurch led all scorers with 16 points.
