Story Archives: Parish property taxes up

Parish property taxes up
by Joey Martin - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
Tax Assessor Monelle Moseley said property tax bills are up for some property owners in the parish due to reassessment.

"Every four years we have to reassess taxes," she said this week. "This is a reassessment year."

Moseley said the State Tax Commission "comes in and does a random study of houses and property and we have to be within 10 percent of the figure they come up with. If not, we lose those taxes and cannot collect any to run the parish on."

She said property taxes support "schools, the police jury, the library, law enforcement, recreation district, fire departments and such."

Moseley said residential home values "have really gone up in Vidalia and are selling for more."

Along with the parish taxes, the assessor said the Vidalia city taxes are included on the tax bills and can be paid at the Tax Collector's office in the courthouse.

Moseley said in the future residents should be aware of a tax freeze for those 65-and-older who have a total combined income $62,907.

"Those people must bring the front page of their tax return," Moseley said.
