Danny's Lounge denied license

The Vidalia Town Council chose not to renew a beer and alcohol license for Danny's Lounge Tuesday night.

The business located off of Martin Luther King Drive in Vidalia has been a matter of contention for quite some time.

"The reason is all the issues and problems we've had there," said Mayor Hyram Copeland. "We are fortunate an officer or someone else has not been killed."

Jeffrey White representing the club voiced his opposition to the move which sparked a heated exchange.

Copeland cited numerous complaints and stated that 40 percent of the weekend police calls pertain to that location. He also cited a recent incident when a young woman was injured and the owner did not call for an ambulance allegedly because they did not want the police there.

White denied that allegation.

"I've asked them to work with us an they have not. Therefore, I strongly recommend to this council that we not approve that particular license," he said.

"Why would you make that decision," he asked. "You refused to give us a meeting. We tried to talk to you and Chief (Tapper) Hendricks."

The city and the owners of the establishment had previously agreed to meet and work out a solution to the continuous complaints generated. They also agreed to shut down the business at 2 a.m.

Copeland said that has not happened.

"I again strongly recommend that we do not approve this license," said Copeland. "We've worked and worked and worked and had not but problems."

Danny's current permit will expire December 31st.

The board also voted to prefile an ordinance rezoning property at the corner of Concordia Avenue and Riverside Drive for commercial use. Copeland said the property will be used for a doctor's office and that access would be from Riverside Drive. The measure was approved.

Following a 30-minute executive session, the board also voted to declare Don Barron Contractors, the builder at the Vidalia Convention and Conference Center, to be in default.

City Manager Ken Walker said they have not completed the project in a timely manner.

The following license was approved:
