Vidalia Shopping Center under new ownership; development planned

A Vidalia company has purchased the Vidalia Shopping Center for $1.7 million and is planning major renovation to the property.

Jimmy R. Smith, Mark Carter and Don Ater through their company, Vidalia Center LLC, recently purchased the shopping center from Lonnie Lewis Investments. Smith, the owner of a chain of Home Hardware stores, said he will locate a store in the former Lasyone Furniture.

He said Vidalia Market will build a new facility in the shopping center.

"We just saw the opportunity to bring in a new addition to the Vidalia landscape," Smith said. "The remodeling and new-look buildings will provide a more modern look for the city."

Smith said the renovation work will include a new parking lot and a through street from Murray Drive behind the shopping center to Carter Street.

The property consists of 9.78 acres with approximately 80,000 square feet of building.

Further plans call for the demolition of the remainder of the center except for Dollar General.

Vidalia Market signed a new lease and will be relocated into a brand new facility by the fall of 2009, said Smith.

"They will start in the vacant lot where the for sale sign is and go from there," Smith said.

Home Hardware is moving from its current location on Carter Street.

Smith said Home Hardware will occupy the 23,000-square foot building that has been a furniture store the past several years and a new building will be erected for lumber and building material.

The new facility will open in March 2009 and will add a few new employees, Smith said.

"It's going to be a lot more convenient for our customers and there will be more of an expanded selection," Smith said. "Home Hardware has been a good store here for years and we have a chance to grow and enhance it. We're always looking to add on."
